A new lumbar assist seating system created for underground mine staff working loaders and haul trucks has resulted in lessened injuries and weakness.

Perth-based Modern Motor Trimmers (MMT), which specializes in suspension seats and seating products for the mining market, spent more than five years enhancing the pneumatically-operated twin air lumbar support.

The 2 stage lumbar system is integrated into the backrest of an ISRI premium-quality T-backed seat. It utilizes the air supply from the seat's incorporated air compressor or the machine's air supply to fully inflate, to support the operator's lumbar region and generating a buffer towards shock and jarring.

MMT is setting up the lumbar system in the premium quality ISRI 150kg-rated seating range, currently the only product currently available on the market to have a flexible back rest which can be angled for increased operator comfort and assistance.

Garry Spouge, Managing Director who founded MMT in 1992, said the business had developed and started to give the latest seating product in ISRI seats in the last twelve months, as requirement for safer and more comfortable seating technology in the underground mining sector had grown.

T backrest for underground mining device, but the prototype did not have an adjustable lumbar support.

"We created the very first prototype in the middle of 1990's, but the patented system we're currently using is suited to an ISRI seat which has built-in flexible suspension decreasing to slow the seat suspension down, while a seat isolator lessens the forward and back jarring," he said.

"This seat was also picked as it's the only one in manufacturing to our skills that reclines. Some other manufactures have tested to start the 'T' back rests, but their seats are non-reclining and this causes a problem when operators have to adapt it for convenience

"We're really joyful with our current design, and currently the observations we've gained has been extremely positive, and particularly, that it's eliminating accidents and exhaustion."

Mr Spouge states that as well as improving operator ease and protection, the lumbar support also helps to enhance seat life by eliminating wear and tear and supporting appropriate posture.
